Betsy and I have been having a little reciprocal love on the blogs, which is probably only entertaining to the two of us, and for that I apologize.  But I do have a few more things to say about Betsy, in response to her last post about me

My law school friends referred to Betsy as the WGF, which stands for World’s Greatest Flirt.  And I learned a great deal about flirting from the Betsy, who is truly, a master.  She is such a phenomenal flirt, she once convinced a gay man to rent his house to her, instead of selling it.  The house was on the market, had a for sale sign in the yard, and was listed for something close to a million dollars.  Betsy called the man and flirted her way into a rental for herself and three other girls.  To this day, the house is still being rented to four girls, the original girls have slowly gotten married or moved away and have been replaced.  But I still have a key to this magical house, lovingly referred to as the Terrace.

When the grass would get too long on the front lawn of the Terrace, Betsy would simply find some unsuspecting yard man during her afternoon run and convince him to stop by her house on his way home and mow the lawn real quick for $20.  Luckily, she is a bilingual flirt, and her Spanish has come in handy at such times.

Did I mention the fact that Betsy is an aerobics instructor?  I’ve heard her step and her sculpt class are legendary.  I’ve heard, mostly because I’m too uncoordinated to do aerobics, and she has this horrible habit of teaching class at 6 am.

Betsy taught me how to take the five extra minutes and ask about the sale price that rang up more than what was on the shelf, how to convince a mechanic to plug the hole in your tire for a $10 tip, and the best way to handle a server at a restaurant who is less than thrilled to be taking your order.  Betsy’s ability to handle people always amazes and inspires me.

I wish we were eating lunch at five star, or the cafe at pharr, or the resort.  Sigh.  Another day.

Y’all, Betsy is awesome.  She wrote this post that basically made me tear up.  I LOVE the things that she listed (the mini skirt part makes me laugh, that was only a phase I went through for four or seven years, mostly at football games).  But don’t let her lie to you.  I copy her even more than she copies me.  The cross I wear around my neck?  That I’ve been wearing almost every day for the past nine years?  She had it first.  And I wanted it.  And if you know me, you know that I never want to have on the same thing as someone else.  I’m very concerned with being my own person and with having my own special, different jewelry, clothing, shoes, dog, basically, I want to be different. But Betsy is one of the few people who I wanted to copy and who I knew wouldn’t mind if I copied her.  Actually, from the moment I met Betsy, the week of rush our freshman year of college, I really wanted to be her friend.  Luckily, we ended up on the same lawn on bid day, and had a unique opportunity to be friends.

Betsy and I share the love of many things, often things that other people dislike.  We share the bizarre appreciation of getting into a hot car that has been baking in the sun on a summer day, we both have an extreme dislike of authority, and any time I get lost in the ATL I know that all I have to do is call Betsy and she will know exactly where I am and where I am going and how I need to get there.

We use the same kind of toothbrush, make up, and have been known to steal each other’s hair brush.  She taught me how to not wash my hair every day and the usefulness of a nalgene bottle.  She introduced me to Amos Lee and Patty Griffin, who both changed my life.  Together we learned accounting, forgiveness, trust, finance, how to get over a break up, how to survive a terrible football game date, how to put the pieces back together when our carefully laid plans didn’t work out (margarita machines come in handy at such times and can be rented by the night), and how just laying in the grass in the front yard can solve a lot of problems.

I know Betsy and I will continue to copy each other, although she is a little ahead of me in life right now.  I was really looking forward to meeting Baby Charlsie Bagwell, but since Betsy is set to have a BOY in a few months, the world is going to have to wait on Baby Charlsie (Betsy, I’m  serious, I think Charlsie Bagwell has a nice ring to it, we can call her CB and ask her what her 20 is all the time, and say things like, 10-4, over). It makes me so happy that Briscoe and Amos are the same kind of dog, because Betsy and I are the same kind of people.  We are Kindred Spirits.  Our dogs have our personalities, which is just the way it should be.  I want to be like Briscoe, and Amos and Betsy – light, fluffy, happy, and adventurous.

There are a lot of other things I need to tell you all, the last few weeks have been eventful, and the next few weeks are going to be crazy.  My whole body is tired.  But I will leave you with this one update.

And a few links to my favorite Betsy posts – Trampolines and Daydreams, Betsy in the PondWow!  Well, you look great!,  and finally, the windsor post.  Sweet dreams friends.

Bobby

My sweet friend from high school Bobby died this week.  I hadn’t seen Bobby in years, and it has been difficult to process his death from such a remote spot.  I didn’t even realize that Bobby was back in Augusta, and I feel guilty that he lived here and I never even saw him.  My memories of Bobby are from the late ’90s.  Doesn’t that sound weird to say?  My earliest memory is that when I met Bobby, his leg was broken, or I think it was broken, it was injured.  How had Bobby injured his leg?  His car was not in park and it rolled down a driveway, and he tried to stop it, and his leg was caught in between the bumper of his rolling car and the bumper of the other car in the driveway.  I knew I was going to love Bobby when I heard that story.

Another memory I have, is, after his leg recovered, we were in a weight training class together.  Weight training was one of the more unstructured PE classes at the Academy of Richmond County – and we did a lot of sitting around and picking on each other.  This would normally lead to some sort of contest, either to see which girl in the class could bench press the most, who could run the fasted mile, who could jump the most boxes, etc.  (p.s. I could bench press my weight – 145 lbs – my junior year of high school, which makes me sort of laugh and cry now).

Well, on this particular day, someone bet Bobby that he couldn’t run a mile in 4 minutes.  We had weight training second period so at 9 in the morning.  Bobby swore he COULD in fact run a mile in 4 minutes.  The weight room opened out to the track, so we all went outside to watch Bobby run four laps in four minutes.  I really thought he was teasing.  I couldn’t run one lap in one minute, and I was fast and in good shape.  I trained for months to do it, and never got close.

Sure enough, Bobby tore around that track four times in right under four minutes.  I’m still impressed by this.

Bobby was special.  You could see it in his eyes.  He was a light.  Since his death I have learned of some heartbreaking tragedies which he suffered in the past few years, and it clear that he was tormented by an overpowering darkness of sadness and loss.   But my memories of Bobby are from a happier time; football games, prom, yearbooks, dairy queen, and bomb threats that left us sitting outside in the sunshine while the fire department searched the premises for imaginary bombs.  They were the days before cell phones, before laptops, when you could put ten gallons of gas in your car for ten dollars, when you treasured your cds, before columbine, before the towers fell, before we were touched by the events of the outside world.     Bobby was a big part of my life in those carefree days, and my life is richer for having known him.

Bobby – you will be missed.

My birthday isn’t until next wednesday (10/10/07, aka 10+10+07 = 27)  but I’m having a joint birthday party with Britt and Paige tonight!  Yay!

Some of my most favorite people are going to be there and I’m super pumped.  Kate is making us a cake, and the dogs are getting a bath.  We’ve been hanging pictures and dusting and buying pumpkins and beer and wine and margarita mix and chips and lots of other awesomeness.  Britt got a margarita machine for her birthday and she is also in possession of a karaoke machine.  Ross is bringing over the Wii for the big screen, and I’ve been making playlists on itunes.  The hottub has been drained, disinfected, and filled with clean water (did I tell y’all we have a hottub?  Hah.  It’s awesome, we haven’t used it yet because we hadn’t gotten around to cleaning it from the previouis owners.  But tonight seems like a good night).  Oh and coolers.  And ice.  Kate claims to have purchased some tall pink candles that burn like sparklers.  Fire is so fun.

The only dark spot is that it might rain.  Sniff.  Pray it doesn’t!  Oh, and I don’t know what I’m going to wear yet.  GAH!

I’m very happy.  I wish you could all be there.

If you happen to be in the garden city tonight, come on over!  Here’s to hoping our neighbors don’t kill us!

Lauren:   I was cleaning out some stuff at my parents house recently and I found a picture of you from high school.

Me:  Really?

Lauren:  Yes, it was from yearbook, and on the back you wrote – "Dear Lauren, you are such a bitch and that is why I love you."

Me:  Hahahaha.  I thought I was so funny.

Jennifer:  What do you think that statement says about your choice of friends?

Me:  Nothing good.

Ahh, Miscellaneous.  I’ll never learn how to spell that word without spell check.  The same way I will ALWAYS be confused about Affect and Effect.  I know it isn’t difficult, I know it should be simple and I’m entirely too educated to not know the difference.  Back off, maybe I have mild brain damage.

So, just thought I would share a few things with y’all.  I recently purchased the Colbie Caillat CD, and I highly recommend it.  It is definitely girl music, but it is upbeat and soothing, sort of something you can tune out, but good lyrics too.  I like it. My favorites are Oxygen and Midnight Bottle.

I also recently purchased the Luke Bryan CD – he is from Albany, Ga, and is fun.  He wrote Billy Currington’s song – Good Directions, and I think this is his first CD.  It makes me happy.  My favorite songs are We Rode in Trucks and You Make Me Want To.

Travers says I listen to terrible music.  Who asked him anyway?

I’ve recently found a few new websites that I like a lot –

The Pasty Quail – this is site run by a few law students at UGA.  Lots of interesting articles and outside links with blurbs.  I was thoroughly entertained.

Walking to the Shops Damages the Planet More than Going by Car – I love this article.  Honestly – I’m all about the environment, I really am, but most people don’t even think through the real impact of their actions – and what might seem "good" is sometimes "bad", or, simply, "not good".

Binge Drinking is Good For You – I just thought this article was hilarious.  I mean – it doesn’t have a real serious point, but it made me laugh.  I like columnists.  Especially British ones.

Oh, and speaking of substance abuse – if it ever comes down to it – please send me to this Rehab.  I feel at peace in the mountains.

And last but not least – what I think of as the funniest SNL skit I’ve ever seen, starring Lindsey – who has been lucky enough to go to rehab at the Cirque Lodge –

girl dates

so this might not be charlsie….

BUT…this might just be one of her very best friends. and definitely one of her very best dates. after all, we’re on our number 4…officially.

currently, charlsie is killing mosquitoes with her bare hands. so, i….molly allen, have decided to take over her blog. wow…what a privilege.

so tonight’s topic is…people getting married. we are in st. simons getting ready to celebrate the wedding of ashley and otis. it’s so wonderful. when two people decide that it is right and perfect to get married and spend their lives together. especially two people like otis and ashley. because they are one wedding we all definitely approve.

but, the big question for the blog viewers is…when should charlsie and i have a “DTR”. for those of you who don’t know what that means….welcome to the 21st century. it means to “define the relationship.” let’s say that charlsie and i have basically been going on dates for the past 25 years of our lives. but exclusively, we have been dates for the past 4 weddings/wedding events. does that constitute a conversation??? should one of us taken the reigns and picked up the tab at mullet bay tonight???

ok…yes, i’m just kidding. but you know that it is quite a feat when two friends…who, keep in mind, have been through many different situations in life, can come together and still want to be each other’s dates to weddings…even if boyfriends are in the picture.

THAT, my friends, is a testament to TRUE friendship. so…here’s to charlsie kate paine and molly kathryn allen..and the many years of friendship that are to come and have been…and to all the good friends around. way to go!

I’m not normally real concerned with celebrities – but I really like Will Ferrell.  I was about to black out.  This picture was from the country club on friday afternoon.  I sort of felt bad that he was getting mobbed – but you don’t finish a round of golf on friday afternoon of the masters at the augusta country club unless you really don’t mind getting mobbed.  And if you want to blend in you don’t have an orange fro hairdo either.   Or space glasses.  I’m in love with him.

Will was also out at the tournament on saturday and sunday.  Travers and Cash happened to be standing next to him while watching a little golf – and a golf ball rolled by.  Here is the conversation:

Will:  Whose ball is that?

Travers:  Sandy Lyles I think.

Will:  Didn’t he win the Masters a couple of years ago?

Cash:  If by a couple  of years you mean fifteen, then, yeah.

Travers and Cash are my heros.

This video is amazing for a few reasons, I’m not sure which is the greatest part.  The john deer green blaring in the background, Betsy, or at the very end when Brad takes a swig of his beer and walks off.  It really cracks me up.  I love youtube.
