Tpd I just got finished reading Through Painted Deserts – Light, God and Beauty on the Open Road,  by Donald Miller.  I loved it.  Thought it was amazing.  I’ve read Miller’s other books, Blue Like Jazz and Searching for God Knows What.  I think he is a gifted writer who speaks to his audience in a sincere voice that has a tone of understanding.  He is honest about the difficulties of religion and the world at large.  He is the kind of author that when you finish reading his book you wish he was a personal friend.  I don’t feel like that terribly often.  I like to give his books away as gifts.  I can never find my copy of his books cause I have a tendency to loan them out and never get them back.  Shocker. Through Painted Deserts is the story of him and his friend traveling across the country in a VW bus.  Hilarious, thoughtful, and endearing.

Sad I have been listening to Amos Lee’s new album – Supply and Demand.  I like Amos Lee a lot.  I was first introduced to his music by Betsy – who tried to make me listen to him for a long time before I finally stopped being stubborn and realized that he is awesome.  I prefer his more upbeat songs, but a couple of his slower songs are great as well.  Betsy really likes Southern Girl – which I also support.  I think my favorite song is Sympathize.  There are a couple of songs available on Myspace – HERE.

La OHH, and my friends Charles and David have started a band called Lady Antebellum, and I was listening to their new music on myspace and I am impressed.  These boys are so talented and sweet and awesome, I’m really proud of them for chasing their dreams.  I don’t think they have an album out yet – but they have quite a few songs available on myspace.  They have my stamp of approval.    Go LISTEN.

The only other thing I’m worried about today is what kind of halloween cookies I want to make.  Sugar cookies of course, but what shape?  Punkins?  I’m thinking Punkins.  Dipped orange with green butter cream icing stems.  GAH.  Decisions are so tough, cause, ghosts can be so cute too.  Or should I make cupcakes?  Cookies are probably easier to transport.  Hmmmm…..

I’m in augusta, and let me tell you that 200 year old houses are real cute most of the time, 10-15 foot ceilings can be impressive, but in the summertime, when you have a 20 year old air conditioner, it can get kind of hot.

I went out with Travers and Cash and Lindsay last night – Paige came to meet us when she got off work.  It was fun and weird and interesting.  I was tired.  But before I went to sleep I reveled in being the recipient of  some late night dialing.  Love it.

My parents woke me up this morning around 7:30 to see if I wanted to go to a 8 am spin class.  I didn’t.  Then my mom came back in my room around 10 and said (keep in mind this is father’s day weekend):

Mama:  "Daddy wants to know if you want to go out on the boat.  Otherwise he says he is just going to go to work."
Me:  " Geeze.   I’m dying of a heat stroke and the allergens are attacking me.  I’m one big histamine.  Leave me alone (I was kidding, but obviously didn’t communicate this well)."
Mama:  "I didn’t come in here for you to fuss at me."  (huffs out of room).

I mean – obviously I had to go out on the boat.  I’m such a devoted child and I would hate to be the reason why my father worked on saturday.  Gah.

I spent a couple of hours this afternoon on the Savannah river, directly below Clarks Hill dam, where the water comes out of the bottom of the lake and is icy and unreasonable cold for the air temperature.  So while the sun scorched my shoulders and warmed my hair, my feet tingled and burned in the frigid water.  Bella and Bo went out on the boat with us and I can honestly say I haven’t seen two such happy and contented dogs in a long time.  We drank a few coors lights, because my mom thinks it is sort of unnatural to be out on the boat on a saturday in the summertime and not drink a beer – and I agree.

I got to see Jennifer for about five seconds on my way home from the river, and I was totally exhausted by the time I got back to the house.  So exhausted that after I watched Georgia lose in the college world series and watch the US hang on to a tie with Italy in the world cup that I had to take a big huge nap on the front porch swing.  It was great.

I was a big loser and nerd tonight because I was too tired to do much more than eat a bunch of baked spaghetti and drink a glass of wine.

My parents had to go to my dad’s 40th high school reunion tonight.  Isn’t that weird to think about?

Did I tell you about the new band I’m obsessed with?  They are called the Wreckers.  If you don’t like them then I don’t like you.

I’m reading The Geographer’s Library currently, and I think it is awesome so far.  I wish I could write a novel.  I hear you need self motivation and organizational skills to complete such tasks.  I wonder if they sell those skills on ebay? I could probably still ask for that for a graduation present.

Free Dolly on iTunes

Please, Please, Please, go download the Dolly Parton song from the Transamerica soundtrack.  It is free, and I don’t know how long it is going to be free – maybe just today – it is up for an academy award and I’m thinking they might be doing a different sound every day.  It is an amazing song.  Makes me want to laugh and cry at the same time.

Have I ever told y’all how much I adore Dolly?  She is my hero.

Here are the lyrics – Dolly Parton – Travelin’ Thru – Transamerica Soundtrack

Well I can’t tell you where I’m going, I’m not sure of where I’ve been
But I know I must keep travelin’ till my road comes to an end
I’m out here on my journey, trying to make the most of it
I’m a puzzle, I must figure out where all my pieces fit
Like a poor wayfaring stranger that they speak about in song
I’m just a weary pilgrim trying to find what feels like home
Where that is no one can tell me, am I doomed to ever roam
I’m just travelin’, travelin’, travelin’, I’m just travelin’ on

Questions I have many, answers but a few
But we’re here to learn, the spirit burns, to know the greater truth
We’ve all been crucified and they nailed Jesus to the tree
And when I’m born again, you’re gonna see a change in me

God made me for a reason and nothing is in vain
Redemption comes in many shapes with many kinds of pain
Oh sweet Jesus if you’re listening, keep me ever close to you
As I’m stumblin’, tumblin’, wonderin’, as I’m travelin’ thru

I’m just travelin’, travelin’, travelin’, I’m just travelin’ thru
I’m just travelin’, travelin’, travelin’, I’m just travelin’ thru

Oh sometimes the road is rugged, and it’s hard to travel on
But holdin’ to each other, we don’t have to walk alone
When everything is broken, we can mend it if we try
We can make a world of difference, if we want to we can fly

Goodbye little children, goodnight you handsome men
Farewell to all you ladies and to all who knew me when
And I hope I’ll see you down the road, you meant more than I knew
As I was travelin’, travelin’, travelin’, travelin’, travelin’ thru

I’m just travelin’, travelin’, travelin’, I’m just travelin’
Drifting like a floating boat and roaming like the wind
Oh give me some direction lord, let me lean on you
As I’m travelin’, travelin’, travelin’, thru

I’m just travelin’, travelin’, travelin’, I’m just travelin’ thru
I’m just travelin’, travelin’, travelin’, I’m just travelin’ thru

Like the poor wayfaring stranger that they speak about in song
I’m just a weary pilgrim trying to find my own way home
Oh sweet Jesus if you’re out there, keep me ever close to you
As I’m travelin’, travelin’, travelin’, as I’m travelin’ thru

Sweet, Sweet Music

I bought some cds over the weekend, and I am quite pleased with them.  So, in no particular order, this is what I am listening to these days (and I apologize that I don’t know how to make the pictures stay where I want them to, I can’t help it):

#1 – Sarah Evans – A Real Fine Place to Start
Sara_evans

#2 Susan Tedeschi – Hope and Desire

Susa

#3 Dolly Parton – Those Were the Days

Dolly

Oh, and David Haywood sent me a message that I need to listen to Charles Kelley’s song HERE – I think that Charles and David wrote it but I am confused as to who is singing, because David said that Josh recorded it, I don’t know.  Whatever, it sounds great.   I grew up with Charles and Josh, I’m really happy for Josh that he has done so well, and Charles is just as talented as Josh, so hopefully it will work out for both of them.  They make me laugh.

Okay, I’ve been saying I would do this, and I think this is a really fun game, plus it keeps me from doing my work. Pete started the game, and lots of people have followed. Now, I kinda cheated, because if I took the first 20 songs on my shuffle, we would be here all day and some of them wouldn’t even have lyrics, so I picked the first 20 that I liked. Some of them are from personal favorites, and some of them I picked simply because I thought they weren’t too hard, but weren’t to obvious either.

  1. Load up your playlist and put it on shuffle
  2. Pick out a line from the first 20 songs and post them
  3. Commenters should try to guess the title & artist of the song that the lines are from
  4. Cross them out when they’ve been correctly guessed
  5. NO CHEATING. (Yes, Googling the lyrics is cheating)

Here we go: 1. You dream of colors that have never been made, you imagine songs that have never been played, they will try to buy you and your mind, only the curious have something to find This Side, Nickel Creek – Libby 2. Did it take long to find me, I asked the faithful light, did it take long to find me, and are you gonna stay the night Cat Stevens – Moonshadow – Libby and Emily 3. I wish I could tell the world cause your such a pretty thing when you’re done up properly. I might want to marry you one day if you’d watch that weight and you’d keep your firm body Alanis Morrisette – Hands Clean – Kipp, although Jessica and Elizabeth got the artist. 4. Girl you used to be the best, to make life real life to me, and I hope that you’re still out there, and you’re like you used to be Steve Winwood – Back in the Highlife Again – Elizabeth and Jessica 5. Yes I can make it now, the pain is gone, all of the bad feelings have disappeared. Here is the rainbow I’ve been praying for Jimmy Cliff – I Can See Clearly Now – Libby and Elizabeth got the name, no one got the artist 6. Sad ain’t my style, but once in a while, I just have to give in. Cause a woman like you, is so hard to lose, you just don’t want it to end Joe Diffie – A Night To Remember – Libby, but Elizabeth got the song name 7. Now I don’t tell stories, and I don’t pretend, and I won’t be around to say I told you then, cause it seems like something’s finally broke, that will take a while to mend Alison Krauss – Forget About It – Emily 8. Shake it like jello make the boys say hello cause they know I’m rocking the beat Ciara – 1,2 Step – Jessica, Pete, Emily 9. Into this life we’re born, baby sometimes, sometimes we don’t know why, and time simply goes by so fast, in the twinkling of an eye Van Morrison – Bright Side of the Road – no one guessed this one. 10. For they could not love you, but still your love was true, and when no hope was left in sight on that starry, starry night, you took your life as lovers often do Don Mclean – Starry, Starry night – Emily 11. All you gotta do is smile that smile, and there go all my defenses, just leave it up to you and in a little while, your messing up my mind, and filling up my sense Dolly Parton – Here You Come Again – Emily and Jessica 12. I was there, and I saw what you did – saw it with my own to eyes. You can wipe off that grin, I know where you’ve been, it’s all be a pack of lies Phil Collins – In the Air Tonight – Elizabeth, Staci, and Emily 13. My eyes fear to close, this reckless letting go is hard to bear, on the edge of all I need, still I cling to what I see, and what have I there? Jennifer Knapp – Say Won’t You Say – no guesses 14. Can you recall a time people loved you unconditionally? Toasting the new south – "this one is for history!" Bubba Sparxx – Deliverance – Dean and Elizabeth of course, and Emily 15. Honey, I got over, you passing me over, a long time ago. And my pride was stronger, when I was younger, now I’d rather have you to know Patty Loveless – Here I Am – Emily 16. You in the moonlight, with your sleepy eyes, could you ever love a man like me? And you were right, when I walked into your house, I knew I’d never want to leave Don Henley and Stevie Nicks – Leather and Lace – Jessica 17. I need you, by me, beside me, to guide me, to hold me, to scold me, cause when I’m bad I’m so so bad Donna Summers – Last Dance – Preston! 18. I’m long gone darling, lonesome blue, I’ve been thinking of leaving, I’ve been thinking of you, but that big city singing, man, I like the way that it shines Nanci Griffith – Going Back to Georgia – no guesses 19. I recall your darkness, when it cracked like a thunder cloud. Don’t tell me this town ain’t got no heart…when I can hear it beat out loud Grateful Dead – Shakedown Street – no guesses, and this one really disappointed me, I thought everyone would know this one! Shame! 20. Somewhere on down the line, you are going to see that this little heart of mine, is so large, so wonderful, and so true. Somewhere on brighter days, you are going to see what a big mistake you made Otis Redding – Remember Me – no guesses, this didn’t surprise me. See old Comments | See old Trackbacks

It was snowing when I

It was snowing when I went outside this morning. It was partly cloudy, but with lots of sun, and snowing. Weird. I love that it was snowing, but I hate cold weather.

I am going to the Indigo Girls concert tonight at the 40 watt. I’ve never seen them before, and the 40 watt is really small, so it should be fun. I like going to concerts. I am going to try to go to more concerts.

Live music is cool. This summer I have a bunch of people I want to see. #1 being Dolly Parton. Dollywood, here I come.

Pat Green

I went to the Pat Green concert last night at the Georgia Theater. I had an absolute blast, although I did break one of the most serious rules of the theater – which is to not drink the draft beer. Everyone knows that the Theater beer is bad for you – I don’t know if it is because they don’t clean their lines or because it is served in these huge plastic cups – but the bottom line is that it can kill you. Travers is convinced that they put drugs in their beer.

All I know is that my head hurts. And I think I have the black lung, Pop.

Georgia…….Georgia…..

Wow, Jamie Fox and Alicia Keys on the Grammy’s………no words. But it did choke me up a bit. Like moonlight through the pines. (sorry, that was ridiculous, but I did really like the performance, and I do really like the song, obviously).

Widespread Panic Simulcast for FOX shows – created by Donald Pickett

"I am a dedicated Widespread Panic fan. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I will have no chance of attending the Fox Theatre shows on March 24-26 2005.
In light of wildly successful Audio/Video Simulcasts undertaken by other bands with similarly dedicated followings, and considering the overwhelming demand for a good alternative experience like a theater simulcast, I would like to graciously request that Browncat, PGA and Widespread Panic pursue the option of providing an audio/video simulcast in select theaters in select cities across America. As always, thank you for everything boys!"

Sincerely,
Widespread Panic Fans
