Greetings from Athens! Y’all, I wrote this whole thing about my feelings about this football season, reminiscing about other stressful seasons/games. Then I read it and decided that none of us need that kind of negativity in our lives and decided to focus on the positives. Like, hey, WE STILL HAVE A COACH! Not just any coach, a great coach! Some might say we have THE COACH, idk, I heard people were saying.

And you know what, if we had to lose the Alabama game, I’m glad Travers and I got to go to the game together, because we had a lot of laughs. At one point I looked over and he was drinking a Twisted Tea, and I’m still not over it. We ate a lot of honey baked ham that weekend, and got to see Hardy play at Flicker.

Athens continues to win the prize for greatest place ever, we recently got to see Corey Smith and Luke Combs blow the roof off the Georgia Theatre. Roquan Smith came out on stage and shotgunned a beer with Luke to start the show, it was excellent.

That Ole Miss game cost me some fingernails and my voice, but fingernails and vocal cords grow back!  At the Kentucky game, someone fussed at me for standing up on third down because the people (perfectly healthy adults) behind me couldn’t see. This is something I might get over by next season, but probably not. We stand up on third down, this is known. I was so nice about it tho, I calmly told them about televisions and couches, y’all should be real proud.

There is still so much football to be played, and so many great memories to be made. The Gators appear to be in shambles at the moment, but you can’t trust those sneaky swamp creatures. I hope everyone headed to Jacksonville this weekend is ready to lose some fingernails and vocal cords. The weather looks fantastic, if a little cold. I know I can count on all of you standing up on third down.

I am not ready to look past the Gators or the frightening nonsense happening in Starkville, but I am considering stocking up on wasp spray. I think we play a couple other teams but I don’t think they are important.

But first, I’m going to stock up on firewood and miller lite, clean the cooler and the grill, wash the bulldog’s UGA jerseys, and call an old friend to tell them I miss/love them and hope I get to see them soon.

And then.

AND THEN!

I’m going to TURN IT LOOSE with TRAV!

With all the bulldawg love and affection (and all the happy skips)-
Charlsie Kate Paine

P.S. come see us in Athens, we will take you to Little Kings on a Friday night for draft tropicalia and top notch pop up mexican food, then we can hit up a Rock Lobster game and walk to Mama’s Boy the next morning. Or the new CAFE RACER!

41 years ago, Trav called Kate with great news – he’d been invited to fly down with friends to Jacksonville for the game! Hooray! Go Dawgs! Did Kate mind? This was our year! Woof Woof Woof Woof Woof.

I imagine she stared down at my less than a month old burrito self while she listened to 18 month old Travers IV destroy something in the other room and thought something other than “Go Dawgs” but it might have had the same syllable count and cadence as “WOOF.”

Obviously my mother is a saint and gem among women, and my dad got to see Lindsay run as he himself once ran. 1980 included the death of my sister Alice in June, and in a year marked with heartbreak and loss, Georgia won the national championship.

The past year and a half have been devastatingly sad, and I have struggled at times with the frivolity of football in the face of such widespread loss and grief. This season brought me back to the fact that football connects me to the people I love, to the memories I cherish, and to the hope that springs eternal when the Dawgs are 7-0 and the weather is getting crisp. I feel it in my bones, it is in my blood. We must revel in the happy times.

This season is a happy time. Turn it Loose.

With great bulldawg affection –

P.S. As always, call your college roomie and your cousin you never talk to – remind them of that one GA/FLA in the 80s when you both got left at your grandparent’s condo in Valdosta and lived to tell the tale. The forecast is chilly, plan accordingly!

P.P.S. Are we changing gear on Saturday? Like after the Georgia game, do I need to change into my Braves gear? Mental note, find old or buy new Braves gear.

P.P.P.S I tore my house apart looking for a better photo of my boss mother at a Georgia Florida game, but the best I have is this ridiculous photo of me from 1992 with Kate looking fierce in the background, I believe walking out of Sawgrass. It’s a very 1992 photo and I threw in a 1992 Landing photo of T3, T4, and me for good measure
