One of my most favorite places in the world is the hill at the augusta national on #6 and #16. I can’t say I have strong feelings about #6 as a hole, but I really, really, really, love #16. I just found this article about skipping on the pond at #16, and it made me want to call home and see what the chances are that I can go the practice round on tuesday. I haven’t been to a practice round since high school. But I need to get a grip on reality and remember that I am in law school and the least I can do is wait until wednesday to head home. GRIP ON REALITY. But while we are straying from reality, I also want to share with y’all this article from ESPN.com last year. This is why I love the hill at #6. It is a place where you can see everyone you ever knew, regardless of whether you wanted to or not. Good thing for the concession stand. Is today wednesday? One week! Six Hill – by Brian Murphy "Have any of you ever been to the Masters? For the lucky few, you know what I’m talking about when I’m talking about Six Hill. The downslope of the No. 6 par-3 features a grassy knoll that would make Zapruder drool with envy. You chill on the grass, and you can watch the par-3 No. 6, the par-3 No. 16 and even the green of the par-5 No. 15. It’s possibly the greatest seat in sports. What a scene, too. One of the more underplayed sociological demographics in this country is the Wealthy, Genteel Southerner. Too often, we deride the South for its gun racks, or its lack of dental hygiene. But the Rich Boys of the South? That’s a thing. They crawl all over Six Hill. It’s the hottest spot in the South during the Masters. Genetically-superior babes in tight tops and short skirts roam the grass, usually on the arm of a trust-funder in his early 20s. You know these guys: Ralph Lauren polos; University of Georgia baseball caps, well-worn; and a bloodline that includes a great-grandfather who invented the paper clip, which provides for the summer mansion on Sea Island. What a scene! Coming from San Francisco, the only times I’ve seen so many people on grass were the old Grateful Dead New Year’s Eve shows at the Oakland Coliseum. Best part about Six Hill: If you get seduced by the sun and lay down, a Pinkerton comes by and, in essence, applies a stun gun to the ribs. You gotta love Augusta National. Fearing Six Hill will look like a Greyhound station at midnight, they hire Pinkertons to roust hobos like me if we dare try to grab some shut-eye. " See old Comments | See old Trackbacks

Law Revue

Tonight at the 40 Watt, is the annual law school talent show. I expect everyone who lives within 50 miles of athens to be there. Doors open at 7, and the show starts at 8. The professors have something planned as well I believe. I will be hosting this exciting event along with my classmates Christy Sanders and Kipp Knight. It is going to be a riot. I can’t promise to be that entertaining myself, but I think it will be a lot of fun. Please come, we have some really awesome costumes. Really awesome. Hot. See old Comments | See old Trackbacks

Mysteries of life

How come, if my alarm is set for 8:15, I wake up wide awake at 7:30? And if when I wake up at 7:30, I curl back up into the covers with plans to doze for the next 45 minutes, I am incapable of getting up at 8:15 and end up hitting snooze for half an hour? I don’t even know if Clocky could help me with this.

How come there are certain people in my life that cause me to lose my ability to exercise reasonable judgment? Put another way, why do some boys make me crazy? I guess I should just be glad that they don’t all make me crazy.

How come the water pressure at my apartment is so terrible? Is there something they can do about that? On that note, why does the hot water in the girls bathroom at the law school (the one by the deans office) only come in two temperatures, scalding and boiling? Washing your hands is a great way to get second degree burns.

How come it was 45 degrees and raining yesterday and today it is sunny and suppose to be 80?

How come I am the only person in america that gets sunburned from riding around with the sunroof open in march?

Why did my dad think it was a good idea to put paint thinner on Bo, our dog, when he got into the green paint on saturday? This is a dog who gets a rash when we wash him with pantene.

How come it is so beautiful outside, and I have to be inside pretending to be productive?

I would ask how come I am late every where and how come I wait till the last minute to get anything done, but I was given the answer by my therapist friend Ivy the other day. She said that because I am ADHD, I wait until the last minute all the time and I am therefore late everywhere because if I am always in a rush, I am never bored. And the adrenaline is worth the stress. I thought this was quite profound, and I agree 100%. Learn something new every day.

p.s. I love how at chik-fil-a, the lemonade has a fat lemon with wings and a face, and the diet lemonade has a skinny lemon with wings and a face. Like little lemon angels. Also, I had the mini chik biscuits this morning, and they were okay. I thought they were like chicken nuggets in sister shubert biscuits.

Friday Spies

I don’t normally do this sort of thing, but since I have been experiencing technical difficulties and have not been able to write when I want to, I have been having a hard time holding on to my thoughts. (Plus E. McPan mentioned me in her’s, which I appreciate.

1. What blog, other than your own, do you read the most?

Lately I haven’t been able to read many blogs, but I love second person singular and wish that Matt would write more. Pete and Evan keep me updated on the world at large and technology and the law and make me laugh. Scoplaw makes sure I am thinking and being observant of people. NDC makes me laugh, and I refuse to believe that he is as jaded and as offensive as his blog. Megan is the best commenter on the planet and I love it when she takes pictures of herself in the mirror. Then of course my law school boys who recap the weekends (and weeknights for that matter for me. Oh, and my first college friend.

2. Are you a gadget person? Do you have the latest thingamajigs and whoozits and geegaws? What sort of gadgets do you own?

I love gadgets. I have been handicapped the past couple of weeks by the demise of my favorite gadget, my laptop. My cell phone has a different light up sequence for every ring (mary beth says I’m the only one who doesn’t find this irritating. My ipod goes with me everywhere, and I adore my digital camera and my sound dock and I make sure that my family enjoys gadgets as well. Because it is so much more fun that way.

3. If I gave you $1000 on the condition that you couldn’t spend it on something responsible (e.g., bills), or save it, what would you do with the money?

I would go on a trip. Probably to New York to see Libby and Maggie and Emily and I would take them out to dinner. But I might stop in Washington DC on the way to see Jennifer and Emily. Expendable income = traveling.

4. What are your five favorite sitcoms of all time, other than "Seinfeld" and "The Simpsons"?

I never really thought of the Simpsons as a sitcom, but whatever. In no particular order with little thought going into it.

1. Will and Grace
2. Scrubs
3. Two guys and girl
4. Friends
5. Frasier

5. Organize a film festival based on a theme. Choose a theme and a handful of movies with that theme, and tell us what you’ve chosen.

This question is actually what made me want to do this little questionnaire, because I was thinking today of all the movies that people should have seen, but haven’t, and how I would like to make all my friends watch the movies that they missed. Keep in mind this is my film festival and I get to decide which movies you should have seen and didn’t.

Movies you missed cause they are old that you must see:
1. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
2. Casablanca
3. Dr. Zhivago
4. The Apartment
5. Citizen Kane
6. Gone with the Wind
7. War and Peace
8. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
9. Chariots of Fire

Movies you missed because you don’t go to the movie enough-and/or don’t have netflicks

1. Mean Girls
2. The Royal Tennenbaums
3. Monsters, Inc.
4. Keeping the Faith
5. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
6. High Fidelity

Movies you haven’t seen in a really long time that you need to go back and watch again

1. St. Elmo’s Fire
2. Stand by Me
3. Risky Business
4. City Slickers
5. Sleepless in Seattle

The annex

I’m being super productive and useful and I apologize for the lack of posts, I have been experiencing technical difficulties in the form of everything I touch breaks and can’t get out of bed in the morning.

But for the next couple of days I plan on eating right, getting work done in the library, going to class, and working out. And I promise I will start posting again soon.

George has officially bit the dust. They say not to name things because then you become attached and then they die. Well, no more naming of the laptop. I am getting a new one (it is being ordered) and until then I am holding my dad’s laptop ransom.

Spring break was awesome, and I will have more to say about that later, but right now I need to go try to get a handle on this whole heresay rule of evidence. So I’m going to watch a lot of law and order. Be good.

Spring Break 2K5

Hello loves. I have been in Augusta for the last couple of days. Here is a list of things I have done so far during spring break.

1. Took a nap on the front porch swing in 75 degree weather with a warm breeze and a fat pillow.

2. Ate dinner with my favorite old friends, Ivy and Ginny and Robbie in Nalleyland.

3. Drank a beer with Travers and Elizabeth while Bella tried to eat the cheese and grapes off the table.

4. Ran through my neighborhood. I love running the route I used to run in high school, if only because it makes me realize that I haven’t physically deteriorated severely – because the run seems short and easy to me now.

5. Ate lunch on the porch with my parents on Sunday and contemplated how fat wood bees are and how it is a miracle that they are able to fly around (while appreciating the fact that they have no interest in stinging humans).

6. Went to Rhineharts with Mary Beth, Will, Logan, and Chris (everyone who cares – I got the shrimp po boy, and it was the most awesome thing I have eaten in a long time). Rhineharts was followed by a lively game of bowling at Brunswick bowling alley. This was tons and tons of fun. Bowling is always a riot.

7. My mom and I went to dairy queen and I got an oreo blizzard on sunday. If you haven’t had an oreo blizzard in a while, I strongly suggest you go get one right now.

8. I watched a few episodes of law and order and judging amy. Prime time in the day time is exceptional.

9. I spent a good amount of time playing football and basketball with my doggies. I love them.

10. I got to spend some quality time with my bed and my favorite blanket and pillow. It was awesome.

Tonight I am going to make vegetable soup to take the beach and a birthday cake for my favorite friend Jessica. Then I think I might take a hot bath and go to sleep. Tomorrow I am headed for Mexico Beach, Fl. Fires and Kegs, Fires and Kegs.

(oh yeah, bad news about george. We aren’t sure if he is going to make it. Really sad. Really sad. I can’t talk about it right now).

Okay, so in case you were wondering, I’m a product of my environment. One of my best friends Jennifer and my brother Travers have been emailing about the masters all day. I found their exchange quite hilarious and thought y’all might enjoy a glimpse into the imagination of the people closest to my heart. (the following story bears no resemblance to reality, thankfully).

The Masters

See you at the Masters!!! yay! I’m bringing my new boyfriend Danny. I told him he wasn’t allowed to wear black, and we had to put some bandaids on his tats and take out his piercings before we go. Also, we were going to ride down on his hog, but I didn’t think my parents
would think that was too safe, so we’re taking the greyhound instead. Danny says it’s the best way to travel because of the toilets in the back and all, but he says we should probably sit by the front and get to be friends with the driver in case he wants a job one day. He’s so great at networking.

love – Jennifer

Re: The Masters

my girlfriend Dami has me running all over town looking for little plastic baggies(she sells schwag weed out of Mi Casa apartments in Athens). We have been dating for almost 3 weeks now, and we get along great. Her 4 cats get along real well with my 3 cats so we are like one big
happy family. We are actually leaving in the morning to go to Daytona for bike week, We are riding my Harley down to Daytona and her step mom and sister (Charity and Roschelle) are gonna follow us in the trailer. We have 2 motel rooms on the strip right near the liquor
store, so we should be in good shape. We are all really excited because we can finally get some new airbrush shirts. Daytona is the home of the airbrush, and we are going to the airbrush museum either friday or saturday. Ill send you a postcard.

I miss you

I’m sorry for the lack of posting. George is still sick and without a laptop, I am limited to my time on the internet. But I miss posting, because I love writing here. I hope everyone is having a spectacular week. In addition to not having much to say this week, next week is spring break, so we will see.

But I am going to Augusta on thursday for Mary Beth’s birthday!! And hopefully will be able to get George fixed on Friday. I really appreciate all the comments, comments mean a lot to me.

Updates on my life:
1. I am still praying for it to warm up.

2. I sprained my ankle walking at the botanical gardens on Sunday. I was walking briskly, trying to keep up with Molly and Ashley. But it is feeling better.

3. My awesome brother Travers came into town last Friday, as did my favorite friend Betsy, and we had a lot of fun.

4. I am getting really excited about the Masters. Less than a month, less than a month. I can’t wait, and I guess it is good that it has been cold because otherwise the flowers would be screwed up. It is so funny, this time of year, the Masters is all my friends from home and I can talk about it. Can’t breath, can’t breath, so excited.

5. I am unhappy with my hair and can’t decide if I should cut it before the Masters. I think I am going to, but I am frustrated.

6. Law school Prom was tons of fun. I had a blast. I felt pretty, and I felt like everyone else was beautiful. I love it when everyone gets all dressed up, the girl in me takes over. Overall, it was a success. Highlight of the night: my fur jacket. Lowpoint of night: Caleb stealing the bottle of crown for the bus ride home and Jay smoking the cigar in the bus.

I wish I had more right now, but I don’t. I love you all.

Tragic Footnote

Today’s events were both distressing and upsetting. My laptop, George, died (and/or is in a coma from which he may never awake). Because I care deeply for George, I got in my car and drove to augusta in order to have my dad’s computer people fix George (I didn’t feel comfortable taking him to strangers).

About halfway to Augusta, a funny thing happened. My battery light appeared on my dash. This distressed me a bit because I thought I might need gas before I got home, but I didn’t want to turn my car off if the battery was dead. I figured I would rather run out of gas close to augusta than have the battery die.

Then my power steering went out. This is scary. It is very difficult to turn the wheel of an SUV without the power steering, although it is easier when you are moving, much harder at slower speeds. My level of distress rose a bit, what if I needed to swerve? A quick glance at my cell phone told me that I couldn’t call anyone without service, so I might as well keep driving.

It was about half an hour before I was able to talk to the car people, and by this time I was on the interstate. They asked me if my car was overheated – and I realized that the temperature was at the top of the gage. The car man told me to pull over immediately, so I pulled off at the next exit and into a truck stop. He said my fan belt was probably broken and that driving with a broken fan belt will ruin an engine. He offered to call me a tow truck.

While waiting for the tow truck and for my mom I sat in my car and read my owners manual for my car. I learned in my owners manual that if your car is overheated (as mine was) that you should pull over and get out of the car and move away from the car, because the fluids in the engine could catch on fire and the car might explode. So I went inside to see if the truck stop sold sugar babies.

Tomorrow we will find out if my car is ruined and if George is going to ever wake up from his long sleep. I love you all.

Winter blues

I keep checking weather.com – like the ten day forecast is going to drastically change every hour. But I want it to change. I can’t handle all this cold. It is getting to me. I don’t like it. I’m not having fun anymore. I want it to warm up. It is March already, so it needs to warm up. I’ll write a letter.

Dear Arctic Blast,
It was good to see you over Christmas, we were glad that you could come and facilitate the holiday fire building and hot chocolate drinking. You really brought an essential element to the season, and I just wanted to thank you for your presence. It was also fun to have you around in January for the weekend, especially since young ice storm was able to come with you. You allowed me to spend some quality time with my couch (although tell ice storm to try to come in the middle of the week next time).

In addition to expressing my thanks, I would like to ask you to leave. It is nothing personal, I really do enjoy you at certain times. But every guest needs to know when they have worn out their welcome. As my mother would say, we all must learn when enough is enough. I mean, you weather systems just need to learn when one part of the country has had enough. We really didn’t appreciate what the hurricanes did this year – I mean I understand one good wallop, it happens most years, but four? I think there is a level of inconsiderateness in expecting us to put up with that kind of behavior. I understand that the yankee groundhog saw his shadow, but the georgia’s General Beauregard Lee did not see his shadow, so we would appreciate it if you would leave and go hang out up north.

We have come to terms with the long hot humid summer heat, we actually have kinda learned to love her in a masochistic kind of way. But I find it completely unacceptable for her to be followed by 4 hurricanes and then an ice storm, and now weeks of chilling frost in March. I don’t know what we are going to do about all of this, but I think you need to tell all your natural disaster friends that the east coast isn’t going to take the kind of abuse ya’ll throw at the west coast. Florida will not be washed into the ocean like California (although it would give georgia more coastline…).

In closing, I would like to reiterate the extent to which you, Arctic Blast, have overstayed your welcome. Since this is becoming a trend with you natural disasters I understand that you thought you could follow the lead of your peers. But this is not the case and we would all appreciate it if you would pack up and head on back to Canada.

See you in December –

Charlsie Paine
