This year is in loving memory of Jack the bulldog, a damn good dog, who we lost suddenly on April 1, 2023, after 9.5 years of companionship, love, and adventure. Jack was the best swimming bulldog that ever lived, and no cardboard box was safe from his destruction. We miss him every day.
Athens, Georgia
October 2023
The other day, my UF friend said we should switch off calling it Georgia/Florida with Florida/Georgia depending on which team is technically home and which team is away. I told her we should let the team that is ranked the highest go first.
I apologize for being a day late on this time honored tradition, I’ve spent much of the last several days, including around 4:30 this morning, wrastling a 7 month old bulldog puppy out of the privet hedge in my backyard. The Honorable Dwight Eisenhouser, aka Ike, who technically belongs to Kate and Trav, but is spending the week with me and Ed the bulldog, is the color of a bloodhound but the shape and spirit of the bulliest of English bulldogs. Ed the bulldog asked me to mention that he is currently looking for a new family, as his current family seemed to have lost their minds.
Oh, did I say that Ike belongs to Kate and Trav? I meant Kate and Trav belong to Ike now. I got a photo the other day of Ike sitting on the couch with his head on Trav’s arm staring adoring at him, while Trav ate ice cream. Ike is a joyous lovable stubborn squish, a dedicated destroyer of shoes, privet, and furniture.
In other Athens news, October has been excellent. The Kentucky game weekend was a rousing success, my house was full of old friends from across the land, the air was crisp, the town electric. I moved back to Athens in fall 2018, bought my house and moved into it in November 2019, and then me and my house were unable to host the legions of people we had envisioned due to the pandemic. The good news is this gave us time to hang some music and masters posters on the wall, and we’d love for you to come visit.
Days after the Kentucky weekend, we saw the Indigo Girls play with the UGA symphony at the UGA performing arts center. Have you been to the symphony recently? You should go. A week after that, we spent a hilarious night at the 40 Watt listening to Patton Oswalt tell stories. I wrapped that week off in the ATL, with a Friday night Taylor Swift Eras show at Northpoint AMC, and a Saturday night wedding celebration of treasured friends on a rooftop downtown overlooking the Benz and Centennial Olympic park.
In short, we’ve been turning it loose around here, we think you should too!
GOOOOOOO DAAAAWWWWGGGSSS! Sic ‘em!
With all the bulldawg love and affection –
Charlsie and Ed the Bulldog, with Ike the Bulldog
