Have you ever thought about the phrase, "As a matter of fact…"?

I feel like it is a phrase that is used quite often but never really thought about. Because if I use the phrase in a conversation, it is totally different than when Wells uses the phrase in his Con Law lecture.

"As a matter of fact I did take a shower yesterday."

"As a matter of fact in the abortion cases the scientific evidence of the trimester structure…."

I don’t think I am making much sense, but think about the phrase. I never thought about where it came from, but it is legal jargon being thrown around in real life. I don’t know how I feel about that, I get enough legal jargon in my pretend life – class.

Okay, so one of my best friends in the law school is the vending machine in the basement. I pay a lot of attention to the vending machine, and visit almost every day. Sometimes the vending machine gives me free stuff.

I don’t see the guy that fills up the vending machine very often, I see the coca-cola man a lot, and we are pretty good friends. But this morning I did get a chance to run into the vending machine man. And let me tell you, he hurt my feelings. All I wanted to do was buy some orange crackers, and he told me that I would just have to wait, in a tone that led me to believe that it would be a while. He didn’t even turn around to speak to me, he just acted like I was being an absurd child.

I’m not an overly sensitive individual, but sometimes people use an especially ugly tone of voice that cuts me to the bone. I was already late to class, so I had to leave, feeling chastised and without my orange crackers that I eat almost every day. And it stung a little.

My parents are in Rome. They left for Atlanta Friday night in order to get out of Augusta before the ice storm. I am now tortured with jealousy. I wasn’t jealous, I was perfectly content with being left out of this trip – after all, I am going to Steamboat on Wednesday.

But then this morning I started looking at a large map of Rome that my dad blew up. And I turned on the television and began watching My House in Umbria – the Maggie Smith movie. I have seen it before, so I didn’t mind that I only caught the last part of it. Although it is a rather upsetting movie, I adore the depiction of life in the Italian countryside.

When I was looking at the map, a flood of memories rushed back to me. The streets all means something different, I have a distinct mental picture for each. The fountains on the corner, the orange buses, the enormous ads on the buildings, the ruins that seem to grow in ever crack and cranny of the modern city, the vespas flying by carrying well dressed Italians to their high profile jobs, the hills, the gardens, the stores, the stores, the stores! Not to mention the food.

While watching the movie I flashback to a weekend trip that Catherine Anne, Suz, Beth and I took to Assis. The mid-June heat of Rome was becoming oppressive, and we had been in the city long enough to miss the county. As we emerged onto the platform at the foot of the hill the refreshing breath of summer overpowered the exhaust of the train moving on to the next town. Our lodging were situated directly below the town on the winding path that cut up the hillside and consisted of a rambling country house of terraces and shuttered windows amid flowers, cats, and dogs.

Initially disappointed with the inn’s distance from the town and the realization that walking would be our only option for travel, it wasn’t long before we came to the conclusion that nowhere in the town could have been as pleasant. Saturday afternoon we sat in the windows of our room and looked out onto the valley as the most tremendous summer thunderstorm rolled in and frightened and delighted us as it lit up the sky and tore into the sunbaked ground as we told secrets and stories.

B to the E…

Okay, so I sent out a mass email to let people know about this new product, which I learned about here. I’m not sure why I felt the need for the email, but I did. And I got some pretty good responses. This is what the original email said:

I found this a bit upsetting. Ian, it looks like something you would enjoy. I think we should boycott bars in athens that serve such (I’m convinced the law school could put a bar out of business pretty easily). I mean, you all know how much I love caffeine, and how much I adore alcohol, but still, everything in its proper place.

Here is some of the feedback I received:
From Jessica: I actually think I might be in support of this new product, so long as it tastes like beer not some fruity junk.

Which was quickly answered by Lee Anne: Hey Charlsie -I forwarded the Budweiser thing to some friends, and got this response from one who has already tried it. Thought you might want some feedback…Lee Anne

Lee Anne’s Friends Response:
Don’t you worry we already got this shit in the hoods of Tampa! I tried it, in fact I tried two…..tastes like Beef Stroganoff with a hint of lime
STAY AWAY
Stick to Red Bull and Vodka, trust me!

About the same time received this email from Travers:
I’ll stick to my Red Bull and Vodka. And to "boycott" bars in Athens that serve Bud E……Cmon Charlsie, that’s the most retarded thing I have ever heard. You consume more caffeine than the lady at the DMV who has 19 Mountain Dews everyday.Your loving Brother,Travers

And my favorite response is from Emily Wolf’s boyfriend, who is from Milwalkee, the home of one of my closest friends, Miller:
Not only would Miller never do that, remember, they have never come out with a low-carb beer. Why does Miller Lite have lower carbs than bud light…..because it is not RICE water. It isn’t rocket science…..pass this on wolfie!!!!

And Ian has his own thoughts here.

Mail orders

I have wasted so many hours of my life listening to how the brown cat mail order system works for the Widespread Panic shows at the Fox in March, I am curious as to how many people actually got tickets, and if you did get tickets, from where you sent the mail order. As far as I know, there was only one mail order that wasn’t returned in Travers’ (my brother) group of friends, and the golden ticket belongs to Cash, Travers roommate and best friend (the order was sent from Athens, on the first day possible, friday maybe?). So Travers and Cash are going to the Fox.

Tell me what happened to your poor little mail order and if you didn’t find a golden ticket in the wonka bar, what you plan to do with the money order that was returned to you.

1. Just because it was warm yesterday doesn’t mean that it will be warm today, check the forecast before getting dressed.

2. It is possible to have absurd attachments to inanimate objects, i.e. my sigg water bottle, my iPod, vending machines in general.

3. My glasses aren’t as strong a prescription as my contacts, and this is becoming more and more of a glaring problem as time wears on and my eyes wear out (regardless of how cool my glasses are).

4. If your alarm goes off at 8:15, that is because it is in your best interest to get up at 8:15. Hitting the snooze button for 45 minutes is not conducive to getting your life in order.

5. The picture window that takes up a whole wall of the law library is wonderful most of the year, but when it is cold outside, it is freezing anywhere within 20 feet of the glass (an area which encompasses half the tables).

6. Five Points Deli has the best tea in america that doesn’t come out of someone’s mother’s rubbermaid pitcher that has been pouring tea my whole life. I love to watch people make sweet tea. It makes me happy. Makes me think of my grandmother for some reason. It actually makes me think of when she used to sprinkle sugar over cut up strawberries and then let them sit in the refrigerator for a few hours and it would magically make strawberry shortcake topping.

7. I love to sit on the yellow benches outside of the library, but still inside the building and watch people walk by. Kent sat out there with me today while I ate lunch. It was fun, I enjoyed it.

8. Brandon Ansley is awesome.

For some reason I am having a hard time with the copy and past
mechanism between livejournal and blogger.  Actually, I am having
a hard time with the copy and past in my computer overall.  So I
haven’t been keeping up livejournal as well as I have been blogger, so
you might want to go to www.charlsiekate.blogspot.com.  I am going to try to get it fixed, but until then…..

Pleasure Reading

As you first see him he wonders frequently whether he is not without honor and slightly mad, a shameful and obscene thinness glistening on the surface of the world like oil on a clean pond, these occasions being varied, of course, with those in which he thinks himself rather an exceptional young man, thoroughly sophisticated, well adjusted to his environment, and somewhat more significant than any one else he knows.   This was his healthy state and it made him cheerful, pleasant, and very attractive to intelligent men and to all women. In this state he considered that he would one day accomplish some quiet subtle thing that the elect would deem worthy and, passing on, would join the dimmer stars in a nebulous, indeterminate heaven half-way between death and immortality.

I love it…

Ian really makes me laugh. I’m excited that he has found new inspiration for his blog, because there has been a noticeable absence in my life lately. We found out the other day that law school prom is going to be in Watkinsville, and everyone is a little upset by this. Thoughts from Ian:

Long story short, it’s in Watkinsville, notable for the fact that it’s not Athens. Likely scenario for a 1L asking out a date:

1L: Say, you’re out of my league. Care to make me look less uncool in the eyes of others by going to Law Prom?

Girl: Well, I got asked out to the Tri-Kap formal in Charleston, and all Trotter has to offer me is a huge car, daddy’s money and unlimited free time. But I’ve never spent someone’s student loan money before, so what the hey! It’s a date.

1L: Great. You know you’re driving, right?

At this point I am lost in class. So I am going to keep on not paying attention. I have been thinking about what it will be like if I actually one day get to be an attorney. One of the interesting things about the possibility of being an attorney is that I might one day have a secretary. The idea of having a secretary is one that is the category of "too good to be true." I don’t know why I feel like this, but I really can’t imagine having a secretary. Or I can, but it just seems crazy. While I am thinking about it – these are the things that I would love to have some else do for me:

1.  Follow me around and pick up all the stuff I drop.
2. Keep track of where the stuff I need is locates. That is the greatest thing about my laptop – I can always find things in the computer. I have a little more difficult of a time with real, hard copies of things.
3. Make sure I am in the right place at the right time. Today was the first Monday of the semester, and true to form I went to the wrong classroom. I was setting stuff up, and all these first years were coming in the door, and I was really confused, and then I realized my mistake.
4.  Remind me of things that I need to do.
5. Make lists for me. I will follow a list, but I can’t make my own and I will probably lose it, so it would be great if someone else had a copy of it and could help me out.
6.  Make cover letters.  I hate cover letters.
7. Actually, it would be great if they could take care of all things that required a certain format, I could give them the information and they could format it for me. I’m not real good with formatting details. Actually, technical details altogether escape me. Other details I can handle. Like details in movies and real life. Visual details. Details regarding the substance of things. Otherwise, I’m at a loss.
8. I would love it if someone would bring me lunch everyday. This would be nice. Or at least call and order it for me. Deciding what I am going to eat next and how I am going to get it during the day is not fun as far as I am concerned.
9.  Take care of mailing things – making sure things are addressed correctly and stamped.
10. And last but not least, I would like to have a secretary that enjoyed being around me, and did all of these things because they liked me and not just because I was paying them. I would like it to be someone that I enjoyed being around and someone for which I had a mutual appreciation and respect. Yes, that would be nice.
