When I was young, I used to love to go through my grandparents drawers and closets looking for treasure. The adults in my life would tell me to stop plundering.
I love the word plunder. Especially as applied to digging through junk drawers. Oh, you don't have junk drawers? I don't believe you, mostly because if you are telling the truth we probably won't be able to be friends. People who don't have a single junk drawer in their house kind of frighten me. I have quite a few junk drawers and I love them.
Last night I was digging through my mom's desk drawer trying to find the password for my parents wireless, and I came across a greeting card I'd given my parents for Easter when I was in high school. It was an Edward Monkton card. I used to LOVE these cards. And I'd totally forgotten about them. I was so happy to be reintroduced to this quirky hilarious artist. I felt like I'd found a treasure.
I'm still watching the hurricanes compulsively, mostly because if my coastal friends have to evacuate for Hanna they can come to Augusta and we can have a big party. And I'm tired of reading about people complaining about not being able to get back into New Orleans. It sucks to have to evacuate. It sucks to not know how your stuff it doing and whether your house is still standing. And I'm sure there were lots of problems involved with the evacuation. But last time I checked, New Orleans is in the United States, which is on the planet earth, a place full of uncontrollable destructive weather which is populated by humans who are not perfect. Let's try to appreciate the work that was done to prevent another Katrina.
Also, I love the google quote of the day – "An idealist is person who helps other people to prosper." – Henry Ford.
One junk drawer is a necessity. Having multiple junk drawers is garish. Who do you think you are, missy?
Charlsie,
You are exemplary of everything that is wrong with America. A few posts below you complain about how you hated driving through hurricane rain on I-20. Then, you say you are “tired of reading about people complaining about not being able to get back into New Orleans.”
Hypocritical much? You are bitching about driving through rain, where these people are evacuating for the second time wondering if they have their homes that they have worked hard for. Oh, and our government really did a lot to prevent the next Katrina. Maybe they should have had the infrastructure in place to have prevented the damage from the first one.
Enjoy your ignorant, upper middle-class lifestyle.
Cheers –
I wrote a long post about your comment, but then I realized that I didn’t want to draw attention to your hate and judgmental nature so I didn’t post it.
I should have expounded on my comment and explained myself better. I am tired of the media and everyone involved drawing attention to the problems involved with evacuating. I apologize if I seemed insensitive.
Katrina was an unprecedented disaster and tons of mistakes were made and many things could have been done differently. But. It happened. Throwing stones about whose fault it was at this point is not a constructive exercise, especially not in the face of another major hurricane season. What I was trying to say is that the gustav evacuation was a huge under taking at great expense and I think there should be a little more appreciation and a little less hate.
My great friend Todd has been working at the SuperDome since 2006 and I’ve seen first hand how hard the city of new orleans has worked to rebuild and prepare for another hurricane. Todd works harder than anyone I know – not just for the Dome but for the city as well – because that is what post katrina new orleans has required. For everyone to stop bitching and start working together to make things better next time and the next time.
And when you say, “our” government, this confuses me since you are obviously in australia, and if you are american, I would have much more respect for your comments if you were here in america trying to do something about the things that are wrong with our country instead of just bitching and complaining on the other side of the world.
I love it when people post their comments on this site, and I am happy to listen to other points of view, but I don’t have time for hate filled tirades about my lifestyle. This is my blog and you don’t have to be here.
And you know what? I do hate driving in the rain. Also, the people of new orleans have evacuated a lot more than twice. And as all powerful as our government might be, last time I checked, they can’t control the weather.
Hi Charlsie,
First of all, thank you for the response. And, thank you for clarifying your views. I really appreciate it. I guess it is difficult to hear some else’s tone in a blog post, but your comment makes everything much more clear. While I may not agree with everything you have said, I appreciate your viewpoint. And, I too apologize if I sounded insensitive. I should not have written the comment in haste.
Also, you may want to check to make sure your IP tracker is working properly. I’m not in Australia, I’m in Augusta 😉
I loved your post on junk drawers…it’s validation for the couple we have here in my parent’s office (I can never find the bottles of white-out though. Like sinlge socks, these must spend their latter years spinning around inside some distant Black Hole!!)
ps(thought you answered above comment very well)
